Ibrahim Almaz, man living in Sudan but not considered a citizen: “We don’t belong there (South Sudan) and we do not belong here either (Sudan). Due to the separation (when South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan in 2011), we became people without an identity, a home country or documents, which is my case at the moment. I don’t have any of this and I need to go on a medical trip. Yes, I have a special case and my lawsuit has been submitted to the Sovereign Council, but I want all of us to get our papers.

Now, your options are that you either take up secondary jobs like carrying bricks or selling bags, or other jobs where you could get caught (by the police). The women serve at homes and the ones who can’t work at homes make alcoholic drinks. When they get caught, they have to pay huge fines that they cannot afford. The government wants to keep them in prisons, and they can’t go anywhere else because they don’t have a home country.
